Marcelino Furtado

 

BIRTH: 23 Jul 1896, Brazil (both parents were born in Portugal)

BIOGRAPHY: 

 

        Marcelino immigrated to the United States in 1916, either from Brazil or Portugal.  At the time of the 1920 Census, he was 22 years old, a shoemaker at the shoe factory, single, and boarding at 141 Bradford Street, Bristol, RI (Series: T625; Roll: 1670; Page: 73; District: 4), the home of Frank Furtado 48 years old (b 1872, Portugal), a laborer at the shoe factory, who arrived in the United States in 1915. Also living with them were Frank's second wife, Maria, 42 years old (b 1878, Portugal; arrived 1916); his step-daughter, Mary Madaris, 18 years old (b 1902, Portugal; arrived 1915), a stitcher at the shoe factory; his son, Frank, 18 years old (b 1902, Brazil; arrived 1919), a laborer at the shoe factory; his son, Joseph, 16 years old (b 1904, Brazil; arrived 1919), an office worker at the shoe factory; his step-daughter, Josephine Madaris, 16 years old (b 1904, Portugal; arrived 1915), a shoemaker at the shoe factory; and another boarder, Antone Costu (?), 22 years old (b 1898, Portugal; arrived ), a shoemaker at the shoe factory. Frank is probably related to Marcelino, possibly his Father.

 

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Marcelino (spelled Marceline), was 31 years old, a laborer at the rubber mill, and living at 122 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 97; District: 5), with his wife, Isabelle (27), a shoemaker, at the rubber mill; his son, Joseph (5); his daughter Mary (4 years and 1 month), his son, Edward (1 year and 1 month); and his mother-in-law, Mary Pirri (73), a widower, born in Portugal in 1857, who arrived in the United States in 1912. 

 

        Marcelino and Isabelle had two more children, twins, Eleanor and Dorothy.  After Isabelle's death, Marcelino married Florinda Carriero and moved to Naugatuck, CT, where he worked at the rubber factory. 

DEATH: Marcelino was a resident of Naugatuck, CT, when he died, at the age of 68, on 24 Mar 1965, in Waterbury, CT.

Isabelle Pirri

 

BIRTH: 1903, Portugal

BIOGRAPHY: 


        Isabelle arrived in the United States in 1912. She married Marcelino Furtado between 1920 and 1925, and they had three children: Joseph (b 1925); Mary (b 1926); and Edward J. (b 14 Apr 1929).
        

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Isabelle was 27 years old, and living at 122 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 97; District: 5), with her husband, Marceline (Marcelino), 31 years old, and a laborer at the rubber mill; her son, Joseph (5); her daughter Mary (4 years and 1 month), her son, Edward (1 year and 1 month); and her Mother, Mary Pirri (73), a widower, born in Portugal in 1857, who arrived in the United States in 1912. Isabelle worked, as a shoemaker, at the rubber mill.

 

        Isabelle and Marcelino had two more children, twins, Eleanor and Dorothy.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Joseph was 5 years old, and living at 122 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (
Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 97; District: 5), with his Father, Marceline (Marcelino), 31 years old, and a laborer at the rubber mill; his Mother, Isabelle (27), shoemaker, at the rubber mill; his sister, Mary (4 years and 1 month); his brother, Edward (1 year and 1 month); and his Grandmother, Mary Pirri (73), a widower, born in Portugal in 1857, who arrived in the United States in 1912.

 

 

Mary Furtado

BIOGRAPHY: 

 

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Mary was 4 years and 1 month old, and living at 122 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 97; District: 5), with her Father, Marceline (Marcelino), 31 years old, and a laborer at the rubber mill; her Mother, Isabelle (27), shoemaker, at the rubber mill; her brother, Joseph (5); her brother, Edward (1 year and 1 month); and her Grandmother, Mary Pirri (73), a widower, born in Portugal in 1857, who arrived in the United States in 1912.

 

        Mary's parents, Marcelino and Isabelle had two more children, twins, Eleanor and Dorothy, before Isabelle died.  Marcelino, married Florinda Carriero and the family moved to Naugatuck, CT, where he worked at the rubber factory.  

 

        Mary married Franklin L. Behlman, Jr (b 1926) some time after 1946.  They had four children: Franklin L. III. Patricia A, Lauri, and Steven J.


        In 1979, Mary and Franklin were living in Naugatuck, CT, with Mary's sister, Eleanor. Mary was employed by Peter Paul Cadbury, Inc., Franklin worked for the Bristol Company (Bristol Division ACCo), as a tool maker, and Eleanor worked for the Lewis Engineering Company (Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1979).  They continue to live in Naugatuck, CT.

 

 

 

Edward Joseph Furtado

 

BIRTH: 14 April 1929 in Bristol, Rhode Island

BIOGRAPHY: 


        At the time of the 1930 Census, Edward was 1 year and 1 month old, and living at 122 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (
Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 97; District: 5), with his Father, Marceline (Marcelino), 31 years old, and a laborer at the rubber mill; his Mother, Isabelle (27), shoemaker, at the rubber mill; his brother, Joseph (5); his sister, Mary (4 years and 1 month); and his Grandmother, Mary Pirri (73), a widower, born in Portugal in 1857, who arrived in the United States in 1912. 


    
     Edward's parents, Marcelino and Isabelle, had two more children, twins, Eleanor and Dorothy, before Isabelle died.  Marcelino, married Florinda Carriero and the family moved to Naugatuck, CT, where he worked at the rubber factory.  

 

        Edward lived in Naugatuck, CT for 25 years, graduating from St. Francis Grammar School and attending Naugatuck High School. He was active in baseball, softball and basketball in his youth, and was a sergeant 1st Class in the Army's 43rd Infantry during the Korean War.


        Ed married
Jeanne Maureen Dillon in 1951, and they spent most of their married life in Prospect, CT.  They had seven children: Debra Jeanne (b 1953), Edward Joseph Jr. (b 1955), Bruce John (b 1958), Ellen Marie (b 1960), Mark James (b 1964), Lisa A. (b 1967), and Thomas Dillon (b 1970).

 

        Their daughter, Debra, married Robert H. Knapp (b 1952) on 3 Dec 1977, in Prospect, CT, and had two children: Kimberly Jeanne and Robert Holland III (Beau). Their son, Edward, married Karen A. Mikletonas (b 1957) on 19 Jun 1982, in Wolcott, CT, and had two children: Gina, and John. Son, Bruce, married Christa Barbieri (b 1960) on 23 Aug 1986, in Waterbury, CT, and had two children: Michael and Justine. Daughter, Ellen, married Leslie R. Feero (b 1944) on 29 Feb 1980, in Cheshire, CT.  Daughter, Lisa, married Charles L. May (b 1957) on 10 Sep1988, in Middlebury, CT, and had two children, Charles and Christi, before their divorce.

 

        Ed worked for Uniroyal Inc. for more than 34 years before retiring.  He managed the Prospect Little League for five years, and was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, in Prospect, CT.

DEATH: 26 April 2003, in Prospect, CT, at the age of 74.

BURIAL: Edward is buried, with his wife, Jeanne Dillon Furtado (d 15 Jan 1999), at St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck, CT, in the John and Alice Dillon Family burial plot.

 

 

Dorothy A. Furtado

 

NICKNAME: Dot

 

BIOGRAPHY: 

 

        Dorothy married August Oliveira (Red), a design engineer at the Bristol Company (Bristol Division ACCo). Dorothy was employed by Peter Paul Cadbury, Inc. (Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1979).  They live in Naugatuck, CT.

 

 

Eleanor Furtado

 

BIOGRAPHY: 

 

        In 1979, Eleanor was living with her sister Mary Behlman and her husband, Franklin L. Behlman, in Naugatuck, CT.  She was employed by the Lewis Engineering Company (Waterbury, Naugatuck, Connecticut City Directory, 1979).  She continues to live in Naugatuck.

BIOGRAPHY: 

 

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Florinda was 24 years old, single, a stitcher at the Rubber Works, and living at 141 Bay View Avenue, Bristol, RI (Series: T626; Roll: 2168; Page: 66; District: 4), with her Mother, Mary (46), a widow, born in Portugal; and her brother, Manuel (22), a clerk in the office of the Rubber Works, also born in Portugal. They had immigrated to the United States in 1908.

 

        Living next door to them, at 143 Bay View Drive, and probably related, were Manuel D. Carriera (42), a wire worker at the Rubber Works, born in Portugal; his wife, Sarah (32), born in Portugal; and their children (all born in Rhode Island): Dorothy (11), Agnes (7), Edward (2 years, 6 months), Beradins (?)(2 years, 6 months, and John (1 year, 1 month).

 

        Some time after the 1930 Census, Florinda married Marcelino Furtado, and moved to Naugatuck, CT, where Marcelino worked at the rubber factory. 

 

DEATH: Florinda was a resident of Naugatuck, CT, when she died at the age of 59, on 15 Jul 1964, in New Haven, CT.
