BIOGRAPHY:  

        Sarah married John Erskine on on 31 Dec 1857, in Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.  At the time of Scotland's 1861 Census, Sarah (23), was living with her husband, John (23), a cotton carder; and their two daughters: Sarah (2 years old, born 12 Nov 1859), and Ellen, (1 month old, born 25 Mar 1861), at 20 Green Street, Calton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  While living in Scotland, they had two more children: Grace, born 30 Apr 1863; and Jennett (Jane), born 22 May 1865.

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Sarah (32), was living with her husband, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill, and her daughters: Sarah (11), Ellen (9), Grace (7), Jane (5), and Agnes (1), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). Sarah kept house and could not write.  They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA.  Ellen, Grace and Jane were attending school, daughter Sarah was "at home".

        After the 1870 Census, Sarah and John had two sons: John V. Erskine, born in 1871, and William Erskine, born in 1874.

DEATH: Sarah died on 26 Sep1879, in Easthampton, MA, at the age of 41, of "pithisis" (tuberculosis).

BURIAL: Sarah was buried in the Erskine family plot in East Street Cemetery, Easthampton, MA.  Other family members later buried there were her grandson, Bertram Bolton (d 6 Oct 1879); her daughter, Sarah Bolton (d 20 Jan 1880); her husband, John (d 8 Sep 1882); her daughter, Jennett (d 22 Jan 1883); her son-in-law, Julius Folin (d 23 Mar 1919);  her son-in-law, Thomas McKinnon (d 11 May 1933); her daughter, Grace McKinnon (d 31 May 1934); and her daughter, Agnes Folin (d 16 May 1963).

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of Scotland's 1861 Census, Sarah (2), was living with her father, John (23), a cotton carder; her mother, Sarah (23), and her sister, Ellen, (1 month), at 20 Green Street, Calton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Sarah was 11 years old, "at home", and living with her Father, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill; her Mother, Sarah (32), a housewife, and sisters, Ellen (9), Grace (7), Jane (5), and Agnes (1), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA. Grace and Jane were attending school.

        Sarah married a man named Bolton and had a son, Bertram (b 6 Jun 1879), who died as an infant on 6 Oct 1879.  

DEATH: Sarah died on 20 Jan 1880, at the age of 20, in
Easthampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

BURIAL: Sarah was buried in the Erskine family plot in East Street Cemetery, Easthampton, MA, with her son, Bertram Bolton (d 6 Oct 1879); and her Mother, Sarah (d 26 Sep 1879).  Other family members later buried there were her Father, John (d 8 Sep 1882); her sister, Jennett (d 22 Jan 1883); her brother-in-law, Julius Folin (d 23 Mar 1919);  her brother-in-law, Thomas McKinnon (d 11 May 1933); her sister, Grace McKinnon (d 31 May 1934); and her sister, Agnes Folin (d 16 May 1963).

Ellen Erskine

NICKNAME: Nellie

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of Scotland's 1861 Census, Ellen (1 month), was living with her father, John (23), a cotton carder; her mother, Sarah (23), and her sister, Sarah (2), at 20 Green Street, Calton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Ellen was 9 years old, attending school, and living with her Father, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill; her Mother, Sarah (32), a housewife, and sisters, Sarah (11), Grace (7), Jane (5), and Agnes (1), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA. Grace and Jane were also attending school, but her sister, Sarah, was "at home". 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Ellen was 16 years old (probably really 19), and living with her Father, John (43 and widowed), her sisters, Grace (15), Jennett (13), and Agnes (11), and brothers, John (9), and William (6), in Easthampton, MA (Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 341; District: 344). John, Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill. Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

Michael Hickey

        Ellen's parents had both died (Sarah - 26 Sep 1879; John - 8 Sep 1882) before she married Michael Hickey. on 2 Jan 1884.  Michael had grown up a few houses away from her, in Easthampton, MA (1880 Census; Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 340B; District: 344).  The marriage record lists her age as being 22. They lived in various places, including Bridgeport, CT, and Seymour, CT, before moving to Naugatuck, CT.  

        At the time of the 1900 Census (
New Haven County, Naugatuck, CT, 3-WD - Series: T623 Roll: 144 Pages: 199 & 200; District: 338), Nellie (Ellen) was listed as being 32 years old, b Aug 1867 (more likely born in 1861), having arrived in the US in 1882 (probably really 1866-68), and married 17 years, to her husband, Michael (34), b March 1866, a day laborer. They were both listed as having been born in Ireland, but he was born in MA, and she was born in Scotland. 

        Living with them, in a rented home, at 219 Prospect Street, Naugatuck, CT, were their daughter, Agnes (16), b Feb 1884, a button shop operator; their son, John (14), b Nov 1885; their daughter Nellie (12), b Sep 1887; their son, Michael (10), b Jul 1889; their son, William (8), b Sep 1891; and their daughter, Alice (6), b May 1890 (really 1894). All of the children had been born in CT, and all, except Agnes, were attending school. A daughter, Genevieve, born on 10 Jun 1897, when the family lived on Hill Street, Naugatuck, CT, had died on 23 Oct 1899, at their home on Prospect Street.

        At the time of the 1910 Census (
Naugatuck, CT, 3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 137; Page: 98; District: 603), Nellie, was listed as being 46 years old (probably really 49), born Scot-English, and having arrived in the United States in 1866 (or 1868). She had given birth to seven children, and four were still living. Her husband, Michael, was 45 years old, born in MA, and a mason. They had been married for 26 years. Their children were listed as: John (24), a core maker; Michael (20), a packer at the Rubber Shop; William (17), a laborer at the Button Shop; and Alice (15), in school. They lived in a rented home, at 114 Prospect Street.

        In the Waterbury City Directory, 1912, Naugatuck, Ellen and Michael were listed as living at 148 Curtiss Street, Naugatuck, CT.  Michael was employed as a bricklayer.  Listed as boarding with them were their daughter, Alice, a button maker; their son, John F., employed by the Naugatuck Malleable Iron Company; and their son Michael, a car maker. 

        The Waterbury, Naugatuck and Watertown Directory,1913, Naugatuck listed the family as living at 172 Curtiss Street, Union City. Michael was listed as being a bricklayer; Alice as a boarder; John F. as a boarder; Michael as a coreworker, boarder; and William J. as a boarder.

        The 1915 Waterbury Connecticut City Directory, Naugatuck listed the family as living at 172 Curtiss Street, Union City.  Michael was listed as a bricklayer, John F. and William J. were listed as boarders; and Michael P. was listed as a coreworker, boarder.  The Waterbury City Directory, 1917, Naugatuck also listed the family as living at 172 Curtiss Street, but John F. had married Margaret Dillon and moved to his own home at 7 Lewis Street.  Alice Hickey had married John Dillon and wasn't listed.  Alice and John Dillon did board at 172 Curtiss Street from 1916 through at least 1918.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Ellen and Michael were living alone at their home at 172 Curtiss Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 253; District: 304). Michael was listed as being 55 years old, and a mason. Nellie was also listed as being 55 years old.

        By 1922, Michael had built their home at 421 North Spring Street. The family of their daughter, Alice Dillon, lived with them there, from 1922 to 1924. Grandson, John Dillon, remembered having gone with his grandfather to help build the house, which had started out as a "bungalow". After the Dillons moved in, Michael built two more rooms, one above the other, and turned a small bedroom into a bathroom.

        Starting in the Summer of 1925, Ellen started a tradition of renting a beach cottage on Milford Beach, on Long Island Sound. All of the Dillons (family of daughter, Alice) would join them for their two week stay. Son John and his wife, Margaret, would join them on weekends or rent their own place when they could get away.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Michael and Ellen (both listed as being 67) were living alone at 421 North Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 112; District: 186). 

DEATH: Ellen died on 24 Feb 1934, at her home, 421 Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT. She had been treated for breast cancer, for less than a month, by V. P. Duffy, MD. She was approximately 73 years old.

BURIAL: Ellen was buried on 27 Feb 1934, at St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck, CT. The Alderson Funeral Home, 201 Meadow Street, Naugatuck, CT, were in charge of the funeral arrangements.  Her husband, Michael, was buried in the same plot when he died on 12 May 1936.

 

Grace Erskine 

BIRTH: 30 Apr 1863, Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Grace was 7 years old, attending school, and living with her Father, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill, her Mother, Sarah (32), a housewife, and sisters, Sarah (11), Ellen (9) , Jane (5), and Agnes (1), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA.  Ellen and Jane were also attending school, but her sister, Sarah, was "at home". 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Grace was 15 years old, and living with her Father, John (43 and widowed), her sisters, Ellen (16), Jennett (13), and Agnes (11), and brothers, John (9), and William (6), in Easthampton, MA (Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 341; District: 344). John, Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill. Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

       
Grace's parents had both died (Sarah - 26 Sep 1879; John - 8 Sep 1882) before she married Thomas McKinnon (b 30 Aug 1862; Chicopee, Hampden, Massachusetts). Thomas had grown up a few houses away from her, in Easthampton, MA (1880 Census - Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 340B; District: 344).

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Grace was 37 years old, and living at 52 West Street, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: T623; Roll: 654; Page: 98; District: 619), with her husband Thomas (38), a rubber beamer (G. S. Colton C. - Easthampton, MA Directory, 1900); her daughters, Jennie S. (16), working at the Glinstafe Mill; Abigail (12), Grace (10), Sarah (7), Jessie (5), Edna R.(2 months); and her son, John V. (14), a mill laborer.

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Grace was 45 years old, and living at 50 Cherry Street, Easthampton, MA (Series: T624; Roll: 593; Page: 95B; District: 682), with her husband, Thomas (47), a winder at a rubber mill; sons John (24), a weaver at a suspender mill; and Roy (12); and daughters, Grace (20), Sarah (17), and Jessie (15), who were all winders at a cotton mill. 

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Grace was 54 years old, and living at 45 Cherry Street, Easthampton, MA (Series: T625; Roll: 704; Page: 204; District: 148), with her husband, Thomas (55); sons John (34), and Leroy (22); and daughters, Grace (30), and Jessie (24). Her husband and all of her children living at home, worked at a cotton mill. They owned their home.

 

Jessie McKinnon

 

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Grace was 67 years old, and living at 45 Cherry Street, Easthampton, MA (Series: T626; Roll: 912; Page: 153; District: 10), with her husband, Thomas (68); sons John (44), and Roy (32); and daughter, Grace (40), who had married Frederick Gould at the age of 31.  Frederick was not listed as a resident.  Thomas and all of the children living at home, worked at mills, most of them in elastics.

DEATH: Grace died on 31 May 1934, at the age of 71, in Easthampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

 

BURIAL: Grace was buried in the Erskine family plot in East Street Cemetery, Easthampton, MA, with her husband, Thomas McKinnon (d 11 May 1933); her Mother, Sarah (d 26 Sep 1879); her Father, John (d 8 Sep 1882); her sister, Sarah Bolton (d 20 Jan 1880); her sister, Jennett (d 22 Jan 1883); her nephew, Bertram Bolton (d 6 Oct 1879); and her brother-in-law, Julius Folin (d 23 Mar 1919).  Her sister, Agnes was also buried in the family plot after her death on 16 May 1963.

 

 

 

Jennett (Janet) Erskine

BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Jennett (called Jane), was 5 years old, attending school, and living with her Father, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill, her Mother, Sarah (32), a housewife, and sisters, Sarah (11), Ellen (9) , Grace (7), and Agnes (1), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA.  Ellen and Grace were also attending school, but her sister, Sarah, was "at home". 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Jennett was listed as being 13 years old (probably closer to 15), and was living with her Father, John (43 and widowed), her sisters: Ellen (16), Grace (15), and Agnes(11), and brothers: John (9), and William (6), in Easthampton, MA (Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 341; District: 344).  John, Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill. Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

DEATH: Jennett died on 22 Jan 1883, at the age of 17, in Easthampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

Agnes Erskine

BIOGRAPHY:  

        At the time of the 1870 Census, Agnes was 1 year old, and living with her Father, John (32), who worked in a cotton mill, her Mother, Sarah (32), a housewife, and sisters, Sarah (11), Ellen (9), Grace (7), and Jennett (5), in house #367, Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: M593 Roll: 620 Page: 145). They were all born in Scotland, except for Agnes, born in MA.  Ellen, Grace and Jane were attending school, but her sister, Sarah, was "at home". 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, Agnes was 11 years old, and living with her Father, John (43 and widowed), her sisters: Ellen (16), Grace (15), and Jennett (13), and brothers: John (9), and William (6), in Easthampton, MA (Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 341; District: 344). John, Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill.  Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

        In 1895, Agnes was boarding at 535 Main Street, in Bridgeport, CT, and was employed by the Bridgeport Paper Box Co.  In 1899, she was boarding at 386 Main Street.  At the time of the 1900 Census, Agnes was 25 years old, and boarding at 830 States Street, Bridgeport, CT (4-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 131; Page: 211).  She was employed as a paper box maker.  Agnes' birth date was listed as Jan 1875.  By 1902, she had moved to 285 Hanover Street, and by 1904, had changed her employment to the Warner Brothers Co.

        Agnes married Julius Folin (Carl J.), a Swedish immigrant who worked as a tanner, in a factory, in Bridgeport, CT.  They were married some time between 1907 and 1910. At the time of the 1910 Census, Agnes was 36 years old and living at 66 Lee Avenue, Bridgeport, CT (4-DIST - Series: T624; Roll: 128; Page: 51), with her husband, Julius (38), a leather worker, in a leather factory, and two sons: John (10), and Harry (8) (probably his sons from a former marriage).

        The Bridgeport, Stratford, Fairfield, Southport Directory, Bridgeport, 1913, listed C. Julius Folin as living at 66 Lee Avenue, Bridgeport, CT.  He was employed by N. Palmer & Company.  In the same directory, 1914, Julius was listed as being a foreman at N. Palmer & Company.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Agnes was 43 years old (actually 51), widowed, and renting at 66 Lee Avenue, Bridgeport, CT (4-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 175; Page: 35). She was a box maker, at the Taper(?) Box Factory.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Agnes was 52 years old (actually 61), widowed, and renting at 66 Lee Avenue, Bridgeport, CT (4-WD - Series: T626 Roll: 254 Page: 41). She was still a box maker at a box factory.

        The Bridgeport, Fairfield, Southport, and Stratford City Directory, 1944, and the Bridgeport and Vicinity, Connecticut City Directory, Bridgeport, 1957 & 1958, listed Agnes as living at 641 Iranistan Avenue, Bridgeport, CT, the Pine Crest Convalescent Home.

DEATH: Agnes died on 16 May 1963, in Naugatuck, CT, at the age of 94.  She had been renting on Platts Mills Road, Naugatuck, CT, since about 1961.  The cause of death was ateriosclerotic heart disease with congestive failure, for which she had been treated by Leo L. Tylee, MD, for two years.

Julius (d 23 Mar 1919); her Mother, Sarah (d 26 Sep 1879); her Father, John (d 8 Sep 1882); her sister, Sarah Bolton (d 20 Jan 1880); her sister, Jennett (d 22 Jan 1883); her nephew, Bertram Bolton (d 6 Oct 1879); her brother-in-law, Thomas McKinnon (d 11 May 1933); and her sister, Grace McKinnon (d 31 May 1934).

BIOGRAPHY: 

        At the time of the 1880 Census, John was 9 years old, and living with his Father, John (43 and widowed), his sisters, Ellen (16), Grace (15), Jennett (13), and Agnes (11), and brother, William (6), in Easthampton, Hampshire County, MA (Series: T9; Roll: 537; Page: 341; District: 344). John Sr., Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill. Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

        After the death of his Mother, Sarah (26 Sept 1879) and his Father, John (8 Aug 1882) he was bonded out to a farmer in the Midwest.

John Sr., Ellen, Grace and Jennett all worked in a cotton mill. Agnes took care of the home, and John and William were in school.

        After the death of his Mother, Sarah (26 Sept 1879), and his Father, John (8 Aug 1882), he was bonded out to a farmer in Pennsylvania.

        William served in the Spanish American War.
